Modular Grips for Static or Fatigue Testing

Description
Modular Hydraulic Grips enable one set of grips to be used for a variety of test applications on metals, composites and other materials. All grip configurations allow them to be used in tension only, tension/ compression, cyclic, fatigue tests through-zero or reverse stress loading.

The configuration of the modular grips allows efficient and easy grip changes, promoting increased productivity. The grip drivers remain in the frame, already tightened and preloaded, while the grip heads are changed. Side-entry wedge with various grip faces, side-entry buttonhead/ threaded grip heads are available andmay be utilised to adapt the grips to almost any type of specimen. Results are accurate and consistent since the design of the grip head assures that specimen alignment is always
maintained.

Specimens are held in the grips by hydraulic pressure applied through a set of grip controls. Gripping pressure is fully adjustable, independent of fluctuations in system pressure, so that the gripping force will be appropriate for the specimen under test. Hydraulic pressure is supplied by an independent source, enabling Instron' s Modular Grips to be used on electro-mechanical and servo-hydraulic systems.
Principle of Operation
2742 Series Modular Grips have two basic components; a grip driver and grip head.

The Grip Drivers are precision units that drive the interchangeable grip heads. These are attached to the machine base/ actuator and load cell in the testing frame, and a removable head, containing the specimen gripping faces. The grip heads are simply attached to the drivers by a set of cap screws.

The Side-Entry Wedge Grip Heads combine high accuracy with ease of use. The ability to change specimens from the side entry loading means that no crosshead movement is required. The wedge grip heads are available with flat or vee faces for testing flat or round specimens. The flat faces have adjustable specimen stops to accurately align the specimen in the load axis for consistent, repeatable results.

The Side-Entry Buttonhead Grip Heads are designed for fast, efficient testing of threaded or buttonhead specimens in accordance with ASTM test methods E8 and E606. Standard specimen holders evenly distribute the hydraulic preload around the circumference of the specimen body, eliminating all backlash without introducing bending or eccentricity. Blank holders 2703-538 are also available for custom threading to suit special specimens.
